So why the hell HotWheels? It is a question I get asked, a lot, also a question I ask myself. I think my compulsion has something to do with a love of things that are different, as in a never ending collection of different. Truth is I don’t really collect HotWheels, not at least as the true collector would, I collect things I like, that make me feel I have a connection to the thing.
And I’ve collected various other things over the years, action figures, Scooby doo toys, albums, video games. All for the same reason, but little DieCast cars really hit the spot. They were small, easy to store and sell and came in ten thousand colors and designs. I didn’t need to collect the expensive ones, there were plenty of cheap version to find and collect.
My favorites tend to be silly design, like dinosaur skeletons or crazed clowns. Designs that no one would ever dream of placing on a 300k Lamborghini, but there it is in the sale at Walmart, maybe in a special Walmart color exclusive!
I soon found that I could make my own designs and backing cards, which used the ante to a thousand! Now I could make any silly design I wanted, honey badger mustang…done, Godzilla vs Gamera Dairy Delivery, just a weekend worth of tinkering and it’s mine!
There something that collecting and making new things does to how you see the world. Everything becomes inspiration and new things become interesting.
Back to the workbench, I need myself a new Creature From The Black Lagoon Ferrari
